Grissom’s Tyrin Gipson-Shields has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Martin Methodist College. The Red Hawks compete in NAIA’s TranSouth conference. Congratulations Tyrin - your leadership will be sorely missed and we look forward to following you at the next level.

Summer Rosters & Schedule

Grissom summer tryouts are complete and the rosters are set. Check out the Varsity, JV, and Freshmen pages for the complete rosters. Congrats to all that made it.

The Tigers will be competing in two team camps this summer:

June 6-7 at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (JV and Varsity)
June 20-21 at Birmingham Southern College (All Teams)

Tigers Playing at the Next Level

Congratulations to Rob Daniels and Dillon Pollard on achieving what a lot of players don’t get a chance to do - play basketball at the collegiate level. A large group of family and friends turned out Friday at Grissom to celebrate the official signing event.

Rob is on his way to Birmingham Southern. The Panthers are a traditional powerhouse and play in the very competitive Division 3 Southern Athletic Association.

Dillon takes his talents further south to the University of Mobile. The Rams compete in the NAIA Division 1 Southern States Athletic Conference.
Gentlemen, thank you for all the hard work and long hours you put into the Grissom Basketball program. We are proud of your accomplishments and can’t wait to watch you excel at the next level.

Dodgeball Tournament a Big Success

Wednesday night marked the annual GHS Dodgeball tournament. The basketball fundraiser has proven to be a fan favorite over the years. And competitive too. For the second year in a row the Black Magic takes the title in a hard fought victory over Seal Team 6. Thanks to all the participants for making the tournament a big success. See you next year!

Golf Tourney Moves to the Summer

Wait, isn’t the GHS Basketball Golf Tournament usually in the fall? Traditionally yes, but we’ve decided to take advantage of better weather and move it to the summer! Come on out and enjoy a great catered meal from Shane’s Rib Shack and a fun round of golf. If you haven’t signed up yet, please do so soon as spots are filling up! Two Tigers Represent in Senior Showcase

Two Tigers have been named to the Alabama Basketball Academy’s third annual Senior Charity Showcase roster. Dillon Pollard and Rob Daniels will join Clay Houk (2010-2011) and Blake Johnson (2011-2012) as Grissom Tigers competing in the prestigious event. The All-Star event will benefit the North Alabama Boys and Girls Clubs and feature the best girls and boys seniors from all over North Alabama. Congratulations fellas.

TWIGB - Week 15

Welcome to “This Week In Grissom Basketball” (TWIGB for short). Each Sunday we recap the week’s game results and individual performances for all three Grissom teams. In addition to the pictures featured here, we are very thankful to have team photographer Cliff Whitmore working the games again for us this year. You can check out the pictures he takes each week here. “BasketballPhotos” is the password. They are free to download so make sure you thank Cliff if you see him at a game.

Varsity
Monday – 60-54 Loss at Lee: Grissom battled back from two double-digit deficits against the second-ranked Generals but fell short at the end in the finals of the Area 10 championship. Lee started fast and scored the first eleven points of the game. However, Grissom fought back to make the score 15-10 after one quarter behind the hot shooting of Devorice Milbry. Devorice would prove the first quarter was no fluke as he kept the Tigers in it throughout the game with a perfect night of shooting, including seven three-pointers, two two-pointers and three free throws for a game high 28 points. The Tigers would cut the lead to one in the second quarter but trailed 31-28 at halftime. Lee once again went up by eleven in the second half, but Grissom hung tough. Devorice trimmed the deficit to two on an exciting and rare four point play. After the Generals missed a free throw and fouled the Tigers with less than two minutes remaining, Ryan Jones sank two free throws to tie the game. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Generals took advantage of a defensive lapse and quickly regained the lead. Grissom was unable to score again while Lee scored the game’s final six points to secure the championship. Zach Smith and Luke Luna both provided sparks off the bench with 6 points each. Tyrin Gipson added 6 assists.

Three Tigers garnered recognition Monday by being named to the All-Area Tournament team. Devorice Milbry, Rob Daniels, and Reed McLelland were recognized for their strong play in the tournament. Congratulations fellas.

Friday – 54-37 Loss at Clay-Chalkville: Grissom ended their fine season with a tough loss in the Sub Region game of the Alabama High School State Basketball Tournament. The Tigers started a little slow but only trailed 11-8 after one quarter of play. Some good play in the second quarter put the Tigers up 16-14 with three minutes remaining in the opening half; however, the home Cougars used a timeout to regroup and hit three consecutive three-pointers to conclude the half with a 23-16 lead. Grissom then fell behind by eleven points in the early third quarter before making an 8-0 run midway through the quarter. Eventually the lead would be cut to two at 31-29 before the Cougars once again responded with a late-quarter push of their own to lead 38-29 going into the fourth quarter. The start of the fourth quarter opened up the scoring margin as Clay-Chalkville took advantage of some missed three-pointers and converted them into fast break points. Although Grissom did not play as well as most games, they battled until the end and exhibited the kind of hustle and determination that led them to the most wins for the program since 2001. Rob Daniels led the Tigers in scoring with 13 points.
